Kolhapur district is the southernmost district of Maharashtra. Its capital is Kolhapur city which is also known as "Dakshin Kashi" for its high religious and spiritual Importance. It is one of the “Shaktipeeths” mentioned in Indian mythology. Goddess Mahalaxmi (also known as Ambabai) is the guardian deity of Kolhapur. According to mythology, after defeating Kolhasur & other devils; the goddess Mahalaxmi decided to settle in Kolhapur.

Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaja is an architect and founder of modern Kolhapur.

Devi Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) enjoys status of one of the important spiritual centers in India. The temple is a marvelous example of architectural style known as ‘Hemandpanthi’ in ancient India. The entire temple rests on number of carved stone pillars. The temple witnesses a heavy inflow of devotees on all occasions. Navratra (Dasara) is a grand annual festival. During these nine days from “Ghatasthapna” to “Khandenavami” and “Dasara” the Idol of Goddess is decorated as various divine personalities.

Kolhapuri Pheta: Pheta i.e. Turban is a specialty in Kolhapur. Forefathers from many families where using turban in their costume and it was a part of the male costume. Even today, Turbans are specially used during wedding ceremonies and festivals. Wearing a turban is high respect. It is a customary honor to guest who comes from other place is welcomed by the offering him to wear the traditional turban.
